Protecting doors, roofs and walls in an alarm system is an important part in order to have a safe and reliable area protection and thus to receive an early alarm. Where is it used

Vibration detectors are often used in alarm systems to monitor softer materials such as door frames, window frames, sliding doors and walls. But also a reliable protection for harder materials such as concrete walls, steel doors, ATMs, safes and other objects where an early detection is needed before the intruder has entered the monitored object. Depending on the material to be protected, it is therefore important to choose the right detector. There are two types of vibration detectors, shock detectors and seismic detectors

Shock detectors are commonly used on constructions with several joints and softer material, as found on window, doorframes and walls, where penetration is expected to be by considerable force with a blunt instrument. The sensitivity is set for lower frequency vibrations that are found in softer buildings material.

Seismic detectors are commonly used on harder materials with few joints typically found on steel plates and concrete wall, where penetration is expected to be by more sophisticated tools. Typical applications would be for safes, filing cabinets, ATM, glass partition and concrete walls. A seismic detector requires longer detection time than a shock detector and is therefore also more resistant to false alarms.

How does it work

Vibration in the material are created by a force against it and will spread like waves on the surface and inside the material. Each joint will reflect and attenuate the vibration signal. In both our shock detectors and vibration detectors we use a piezoelectric disc that creates an electrical signal with amplitude proportional the strength of the vibration signal.
The lower the vibration signal emitted the more important is the contact of the sensor to the material. For the seismic detectors this is very important for its effectiveness as some burglary tools only create very low amplitude vibrations. It is not of equal importance for shock detectors, which are used to monitor objects where high signal amplitude is expected.
The Alarmtech shock detectors are electronic detectors each with their own evaluating electronics based on digital signal processing in a microprocessor with an advanced detection algorithm. In electronic detectors, the amplitude, frequency and duration of the vibration that triggers an alarm can be defined. There are many low frequency disturbances caused by activities within buildings as well as outside traffic that are eliminated with frequency filters and by the detector algorithm.
The shock detectors include digital signal processing with 3 separate detection channels: integration channel/saw channel that detects weak signal with long duration, counter channel that senses strong impacts on the monitored surface and explosion channel that detects very strong signal with short duration. The sensitivity and other settings are selected via a DIP switch.

How are they fitted

For shock detectors, it is important to place the detector as close to the area where penetration is expected as possible. Make sure there are no machines or loose doors or windows that could create signals. It is important to mount the detector directly on the material with the enclosed hardware. Make sure that the base of the detector is firmly attached to the protected surface so that it will be able to pick up the signals created inside the material when it is subjected to an external attack.

How does it work

The Alarmtech seismic detectors include digital signal processing (DSP) with advanced detection algorithm. As a result, the detector is high performing with high immunity to external disturbances. The device has 3 separate detection channels: integration channel (detects weak signals), counting channel (up to 4 events) and exposition channel (detects strong signals with short duration).
The VD 500 seismic detector is also equipped with a temperature sensor that triggers an alarm at 75°C or a temperature change of 6°C/min, it also has tamper protection against attempts of breaking or opening the housing as well as a self-test generator with a separate input for remote testing control.

How are they fitted

For seismic detectors it is important to find a place where the detector sees the least number of joints in the material. If protecting a safe or filing cabinet always place one detector on the door and one or more on the body. Avoid positioning electric transformers, rotating machinery, ventilation nozzles and similar equipment close to the detectors as they can cause vibrations that can trigger the detectors. It is important to mount the detector directly on to the material with the enclosed hardware. Ensure that the base of the detector is firmly fixed onto the protected surface.
When mounting on concrete or brick walls, the mounting plate MP 500 with anchor bolt must always be used, as this captures the signals inside the material and provides a larger detection area
